Amazon Kindle Vs Barnes and Noble Nook

With so many new electronic gadgets coming out, many consumers are confused about the difference between similar devices. The explosive popularity of e-book readers particularly raises the question of which is best. For under 0, the two most prominent are Amazon Kindle and Barnes and Noble Nook. Although other readers are available, these two being from large companies, have monopolized the market in their price range. The recent challenge of the iPad has opened the door to tough competition, but if you just want a small, light weight and affordable e-reader, Kindle and Nook still hold great appeal.

barnes and noble nook

E-readers are more than just a fad. More and more, people are turning to e-readers as a replacement for their printed counterparts. No more ink on your hands or having to bring in the paper when the weather is bad.

BARNES AND NOBLE

Having come out first, Amazon Kindle has several advantages over Nook. Kindle has a real keyboard and is easier to navigate than Nook. Moreover, Kindle has crisper text for easier reading, weighs two ounces less and even outlasts the battery life of Nook by four days! The Kindle screen is also well suited for reading even in bright sunshine.

Despite these great features, Kindle is not without its limitations. If you're a big gamer for example, Nook would certainly be a better way to go. Moreover, Nook provides more free options and allows e-book sharing among friends for 14 days. Nook is also a good alternative to the significantly higher priced iPad. Although even Nook cannot compete with all of iPad's features, at well less than half the price, it provides a good value for those looking beyond basic e-reader functionality.

Both Kindle and Nook support a wide range of e-books. Although Amazon Kindle still supports more, both provide great entertainment and a means for exercising your brain more than television.

In the end, what it really comes down to is personal preference. While some may prefer the extra bells and whistles and slightly more slender feel of the Nook, others will go with the easier reading and superior navigation control of the Kindle. Although Nook may outdo Kindle in the gaming department, for true e-book reading, Kindle still out-shines its closest competitor.

NYU Film School - A Review

I obtained the BFA in Film Production from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. As someone who has also attended USC's Film School as well as having taken classes at UCLA's Film Program, I thought I could offer some good perspective of what I thought of each and start with the one I spent the most time at: NYU.

The Location

TEXTBOOK STORE NYC

NYU's film school is located in Greenwich Village on the island of Manhattan in New York City. Going to school in such an urban location offers both positives and negatives. On a positive note, New York City is your campus and therefore you are in the mix of all the limitless cafes, stores, famous locations, iconic neighborhoods and interesting New York personalities that the city is famous for.

On the negative side, also, New York City is your campus so you don't have the 'protected campus experience' you would have at a school with a closed off dedicated campus. In my opinion I viewed living, taking classes and making films in NYC to be a tremendous advantage. Where else would you get such great inspiration and material to draw from than in one of the greatest cities in the world. The only negative would be if you wanted to get out of the city to shoot or just to get some quiet away from the hustle of the city. It's hard to keep a car in the city without spending a fortune but subways and trains can take you just about anywhere you need to go affordably.

The Curriculum

NYU Film School's curriculum consists of classes in all the major areas of the filmmaking process. There are classes in sound, editing, writing, television technology and finally group classes where you make films together in small crews. Generally, as you move through the program the projects you work on become more complex. In beginning film classes you might make black and white 8mm or short videos.

As you progress you make longer and more complex projects and can choose between experimental type or narrative films. Generally students are given a certain amount of tape or film stock and the basic equipment such as lights and dollies that one would need. If a student wishes to make something that requires more complex props and/or equipment then they need to provide the funding themselves.

Generally, every student that wants to can direct their own films with other students acting as crew members on their films and vice versa. NYU has a good selection of equipment. It is not always the latest technology and technology changes so frequently, especially when it comes to video, but in general you won't be lacking for anything. They have ample editing facilities running from old steenbeck for film splicing to computer systems for use of final draft and adobe premier. Again, if a student wishes to shoot more footage than the school is willing to supply film or video for the student can pay for additional developing, etc.

The Professors

Generally I found the professors to be competent with a few 'exceptional' ones thrown in. They are all working professionals with some more successful than others. In some classes you also have guest lecturers and occasionally famous alumni will teach a class such as Spike Lee or Woody Allen. Each week the school hosts film screenings and the director or producers of the film will show up to discuss with the class and take questions about how the film was put together and the history of making the film. These are great opportunities to network with successful alumni and often previous graduates of the program show up to watch these screenings so they are a great way to make contacts.

After Graduation.

Where I felt the NYU Film Program fell a little short was in career planning and direction. They didn't dedicate a whole lot of time to teaching you how to build a career after you graduated. This is one of the flaws I have found in most film programs. Luckily, NYU has so many graduates that work in the industry that if you are proactive you should easily be able to find successful graduates willing to sit down and speak with you about your 'after graduation' game plan.

In recent years the school has been good at building up its active alumni organization on both the East and West coasts so whether you decide to be based in New York or Los Angeles you can utilize this resource to create a network for yourself which is very important. Overall, I found the NYU Film School experience to be a good one for those wanting a generalized education in different aspects of filmmaking before embarking on a career.

Why should you buy the Barnes and Noble Nook?

BARNES AND NOBLE

Convenience.

There's nothing more convenient than being able to take my favorite books with me wherever I go and have access to them anytime I want. My e-reader saves a lot of space in my house and is also a great thing to have on vacations because I can read my favorite books without having to take them all with me in a big book bag.

The Nook is a great e-reader because I have a great bookstore at my fingertips 24/7 and I have the ability to download over 2 million books. This e-reader can hold up to 1,500 books so I will almost never run out of storage to download new books that I find each month. Best of all, if I ever reach the 1,500 book limit on my Nook all I have to do is insert a memory card and I have more space available.

Awesome Features

The Barnes and Noble Nook has an e-ink screen which is cool because it's just like reading the printed page of a book and best of all I can read my Nook outside even in bright sunlight and not have to worry about the glare from sunlight that I have to deal with if I'm using my laptop outside.

This e-reader has a long battery life and I can read for up to 10 days without having to recharge it. This is great if I ever go on a long plane flight I can have confidence that my Nook wont die on me after only a couple of hours.

One of the coolest things that I like about the Nook is that it remembers the last page that I read in whatever book I'm currently reading and it's syncs with my other devices so if I want to read my Nook books on my iPad or Android Phone I can pick up where I left off without having to find my last place.

Organization

Nook is also awesome because they offer a new feature called 'my shelves' that enables you to sort all of your books under category so you find them easily the next time you want to go back and read them.

I also love Nook because I can password protect it so unauthorized users can read my books without my approval.

Some other cool things that I love about Nook are it's LendMe Technology that let's me lend my favorite books with my friends for up to 14 days. I also love the color navigation panel, WiFi access and so much more. There's lots to love about the Nook!

To buy the Barnes & Noble Nook on sale please visit your local Barnes & Noble store or use your favorite search engine to find the Nook on sale. Many websites are offering great sales on the Nook right now and will save you time and money.

The Best E-Readers for Students

There are many choices in terms of e-readers out there and there are many other devices that can double as e-readers, so you can rest assured that you'll have plenty of options to choose from. Narrowing down the choices really comes down to how much you're prepared to spend and the types of features you're looking to get into.

Now, the Amazon Kindle models are particularly popular and they may well be the best e-readers on the market. The Amazon Kindle 2 has a boatload of books with nearly two million available titles, so that's a good start. Plus it comes with a QWERTY keyboard and a Sprint-powered Whispernet connection to make it one of the fastest units anywhere. You can usually find an Amazon Kindle 2 at just under 0.

BARNES AND NOBLE TEXTBOOK STORE NYC

The Amazon Kindle DX is another popular e-reader that packs in a whole whack of battery life and 50% better contrast than the previous incarnation. It also packs a QWERTY keyboard and will run you just under 0. Students can get a good amount of textbooks on it, but it's better to double-check before you go signing up for one.

The Barnes & Noble Nook will run you around the same amount as the Amazon Kindle 2 with its Wi-Fi-only version. There's a lot of content available with this baby, too, and the Barnes & Noble connection opens up the library considerably. There is no specified textbook section yet, though, but a good amount of them are available through the normal search methods.

These are just three options you have when looking for an e-reader. Other companies, like Sony, have e-readers for students as well and these are worth a look. The best way to check out any tech product is to get on down to your store of choice for a hands-on demonstration, of course. Don't be afraid to ask questions, either, and make sure you get what you want out of your new e-reader.

The Facts on Overpopulation

We were warned some years ago not to have more than two children for this would feed the problems of world overpopulation. Since we had five more, we obviously didn't heed this advice. The warning today is louder than ever.

Several decades ago, Paul Ehrilich said, "It is already too late to avoid famines that will kill millions, possibly by 1975". Another false prophet said, "I state flatly that the hungry world will not able able to feed itself ten years from now". This was stated in 1967. Yes, the evidence for world overpopulation and its destruction of the earth, has vanished.

TEXTBOOK STORE NYC

Admittedly world population is constantly increasing. In the U.S. the rate is presently one more person every 16 seconds. We have 3.5 billion more people in the world than in 1950. However, this does not mean it is overcrowded. As proof, how long would you have to drive from your present location to be in wide open places? For us, it would take five minutes.

In the U.S. the population density of the state of New Jersey is indeed 1171 people/mile2, yet 7 states have less than 20 people/mile2 and the same number have fewer than a million citizens. The average population density of the entire country is only 95 people/mile2. The city in which I live can fit comfortably its 65,400 people into 30 square miles, a population density of 2160 people/mile2. The average school classroom, where children spend more time than any other place during the week, has a population density of a million people/mile2. In other words, to be crowded, you have to choose to bunch together. Overpopulation is not caused by a lack of land.

The population density of the world is presently 34 people/mile2, or a full seven and a half acres of usable land for every person on earth. The simple fact is that most of the world is empty. In fact, we could get the entire world population into West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri if everyone lived as close as they do in New York City, about 25,000 people/mile2. If you refer the less crowded suburbia density, everyone could live comfortably in the 48 contiguous states.

The starving people of Bangladesh (2750 people/mile2) or India (890 people/mile2) are often presented as evidence for overcrowding. The crowded conditions are blamed for their troubles. Yet, contrast India with the industrial giant Japan whose density is only slightly less. Instead, the reasons why starvation is rampant in areas include false religious beliefs, unwise political control, corruption, wars, and other man-made conditions, rarely overpopulation. Honestly, most lands, including India, could easily sustain its present population.

Yet the warning trumpets continue to be blasted. "We cannot long continue our present rate of progress. The first check for our growing prosperity, however, must render our population excessive". Does this sound like the result of a recent study? It was written in 1865! "Our number are burdensome to the world, which can hardly support us". That was written by Tertullian in the second century! How comical in light of the fact that India alone has sufficient rich farmland to provide food for the entire world! And food production has increased 1000% in the last 75 years. The danger of starvation is decreasing, not increasing.

What difference does it make whether or not these facts are believed or not? The principle is, if you cause a crisis, you can get just about anything you want. The doom and gloom about world overpopulation has encouraged the justification of abortion since another person will demand food, water, fuel, and the like. Children are a liability to the world and any way to get rid of them is viewed as good.

The medical field is also influenced, as expressed in a leading textbook for training Gynecologists. "In the minds of many, rapid growth of population has become second only to nuclear warfare as civilization's greatest menace. The gynecologist- obstetrician has assumed a leadership role and has recognized the necessity of controlling human fertility... Population growth is perforce temporary; that it will- indeed must- eventually cease, halted either by an increase in deaths or a decrease in births. There is no other way. Thus, people must come to want fewer children". A woman visited a doctor so trained might get what advice if he feels she has had enough children? In fact, at 800,000, hysterectomies are the second most common major surgery each year in the US, yet only 10% are due to cancer.

The heart of the problem is not overpopulation but lack of love for children. They are too often viewed as a hindrance to accomplishing our goals. However, the truth is that children are the future of any country. When properly trained, they multiply the potential of parents and benefit society in a multitude of positive ways. Children are indeed not the cause of the world's destruction, but its future hope.

Barnes and Noble: A Buy or Sell?

As Amazon recently reported its quarterly results, which, not only did I predict right on, but surprised many other experts and analysts awaiting a more negative outcome, one of its competitors, Barnes and Noble (BKS), which typically utilizes similar methods in achieving its respective businesses will be reporting earnings shortly as well. With such similar trends and data, you, as a shareholder of this stock should expect to gain similar capital after this recognized bookstore reports its earnings in about two weeks. While the parallelism is perceived as obvious, the truth may actually be a bit surprising.

barnes and noble locations

In the short term, you should see a very similar trend to what Amazon is currently doing. While I cannot be sure that Barnes and Noble will report results that will boost the share price in the same way it did to Amazon, I have a good feeling that because both corporations are very similar and have reported very comparable trends in terms of share price growth over the last five years, that come November 16th, you should see a nice gain in your capital if you own a piece of this company. Looking at a more detailed approach, like Amazon, Barnes and Noble has posted pretty solid fundamentals during the past two years. It's true that margins have fallen, but a lot that can be attributed to poor investing and financing fundamentals instead of the more important operational numbers. What I also see as a positive for Barnes and Noble is how it continuously has beaten earnings over the past four quarters. While such may be common to other stocks, with an EPS estimate for this quarter of only negative 0.04, I absolutely, with the advancement of consumer spending and sentiment, coupled with good economic data reported during this quarter, believe that Barnes and Noble will handily beat expectations on the bottom line. Another positive to keep in note, is that while the economy may be slowing a bit in terms of more institutional factors such as in housing, in terms of the consumer, with the recent report that the unemployment rate is at its lowest point in over five years, consumers are going to have more discretionary income to spend, which should push earning numbers even farther for Barnes and Noble over the next few quarters, especially with the Christmas holiday season approaching. The other important indicator that I like from Barnes and Noble is its P/E ratio. Compared to its other competitors of Books-A-Million, Borders, and even Amazon, Barnes and Noble has the lowest P/E ratio out of these respective competitors signaling an undervalued stock ready to possibly break a 52 week high. If are not a shareholder of this company, I would strongly recommend purchasing shares before earnings are released.

BARNES AND NOBLE

However, with such promise and optimism comes a catch. Yes, it is true that Barnes and Noble is underperforming but in excellent position to excel in the short run. However, in the long run I would not share a similar sentiment. As the nature of Barnes and Noble is a high price selling book store, the reason I argued that the share price may be a good bargain now is because of the current economic situation. When consumers have more jobs and higher incomes, they tend to spend more on luxury goods such as books for pleasure. However, once, and it will happen soon, this economic condition reverses into a slower economic growth state, do not expect earnings from Barnes and Noble to resemble what you may see in the coming months. As a slower economy approaches with the prospect that this company is very volatile in terms of its share price, do not feel optimistic that you will increase your capital gains very fast. Truthfully, around April to about June time frame of 2007, I would actually start selling most of my shares of Barnes and Noble for the reason I mentioned above, coupled with the seasonal displacement stocks usually have during this time.

Thus, while Barnes and Nobles shows excellent signs of producing a glamorous quarter in the next few weeks, do not be too complacent if you are a long term investor. I say this because more than likely, once Barnes and Noble hits a new 52 week high in the coming months, do not expect such growth to sustain into next year simply due to the inevitable but ephemeral and cyclical nature of the economy. In the short term, however, I absolutely would advocate purchasing shares of this company, if you haven't already, because there is still money to be made in this current bull market.

A Weekend Out and About in New York City!

Empire State Building

Visitors can take an elevator to the lofty heights of the Empire State Building and enjoy remarkable views of the city from the observatory. This structure was the tallest building in the world when it was first built in 1931 and held that distinction for 41 years. The Empire State Building is a prime example of the Art Deco style of design that was popular during the 1930s.

Art Lovers' Paradise

New York is a paradise for art lovers, with many fine galleries and some of the top museums in the world. Among these the Museum of Modern Art is a must-see for its fine examples of contemporary art. In addition to stunning examples of painting and sculpture by history's top names in art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art contains a wing with artifacts from Ancient Egypt, another with typical furnished rooms from hundreds of years ago, a costume wing with clothing from the past and exhibits of ancient swords, guns and shining armor.

In warm weather make sure to visit the rooftop sculpture garden, which offers a bar and great views of Central Park in addition to incredible works by Rodin. The Museum of Natural History is a perpetual favorite for all ages. The dinosaur and whale skeletons are two of the most popular exhibits, but there are also interesting exhibits of the tools and of cultures from around the globe.

Let Go in Central Park

Between the Museums of Art and Natural History lies Central Park, 843 acres of green in the middle of the city. While best avoided at night, in the daytime it is filled with picnicking families, roller bladers, frisbee tossers and dog walkers. In summer rowboats can be rented at Loeb Boathouse on the east side at 74th Street and in winter visitors can strap on ice skates at the Wollman Ice Rink on the east side of the park at 62nd Street.

At the southeastern end of the park lies Central Park Wildlife Center and Children's Zoo, featured in the recent children's film Madagascar. The Children's Zoo portion is particularly delightful, with animals like sheep and goats to pet and feed, giant eggs and stone rabbits for the little ones to play on and plenty of great photo opportunities.

Shoppers Alert!

Finally, New York has seemingly endless choices for the ardent shopper. For the luxury shopper, the area uptown on Fifth Avenue between 50th Street and Central Park is filled with stores like Tiffany's, Prada and Versace as well as more accessible brands like Banana Republic. Those looking for a funkier, downtown shopping experience should check out Soho, Greenwich Village and the East Village. Chinatown is filled with quaint shops with fun Chinese items like pottery, robes and chopsticks. For new books the Barnes & Noble at 6th Avenue and 21st Street is a good choice, but for used books, remainders and overstocks the Strand at Broadway and 12th Street is the place to go. It boasts four floors of books. Also, the Strand Carries some new titles and a nice selection of reviewers' copies - books newly out on the market that were given to book reviewers and are now available at half price.
