Kindle 3 Vs Kindle 2 Vs Nook - What Are the Kindle 3 Changes? How Does it Compete With the Nook?

Amazon is aiming to shake up the ebook reader market once again by announcing the 3rd generation of the Kindle, dubbed the Kindle 3. So what can you expect to see different when comparing the Kindle 3 Vs. the Kindle 2? Here's a detailed look.

barnes and noble book

The Kindle 3 Vs. Kindle 2:

BARNES AND NOBLE

The new Kindle 3 will have a few different features that differ from the earlier generation.

Change #1) Updated E-Ink Reading Screen- Amazon is reporting a new "High Contrast" model of the E-Ink screen, still allowing for reading in bright lighting conditions, but according to Amazon, improved.

Change #2) Storage Space Increase- The earlier Kindle 2 model had 2G of storage, allowing for 1,500 books to be stored on the device. The Kindle 3 will effectively double the space to 3,500 books allowed.

Change #3) Different (More Compact) Design- Amazon is going for the "sleeker" look. The new model takes away 21% of the Kindle 2 design size, keeping the 6 inch reading screen the same size. This also makes for a lighter ebook reader for the Kindle 3. According to Amazon, it's now 15% lighter.

Change #4) New Reading Fonts- Amazon is adding some more fonts that they call "crisper" and more dark for easier reading.

Change #5) Improved Page Turn Time- According to Amazon, the page turn time is 20% faster now with the 3rd generation.

Change #6) QUIETER Page Turn Buttons- My husband would like to hear this point, as my clicking the page turn button has kept him from falling asleep in the past. Apparently others have been complaining about this too and Amazon has taken notice.

Change #7) Increased Battery Life- Amazon is reporting an improved battery that allows up to 1 month of reading with the wireless off. With wireless left on, the reading time is 10 days. That is an increase in about 2 weeks with wireless off, and a few days with wireless on.

Other Notable Changes) Now you can choose between 2 different colors when purchasing the Kindle (black/graphite or white). You can share passages with people on Facebook or Twitter from your device. Use Whispersync to sync your Kindle with any of your other devices (phones, laptops, etc...)

The Kindle 3 Vs Nook- How Do The Changes Stack Up Against the Nook?

Battery Life- The Kindle 3 now has a battery life (with wireless off) of about a month. The Nook is at 10 days with wireless off.

Storage Space- The Nook has a standard memory size that allows 1,500 books with an expandable memory slot for SD cards. The Kindle 3 now has a standard memory of 3,500 books.

Size/Weight- The Nook has a weight of 12.1 ounces. The Kindle 3 is 8.7 ounces, quite a difference now. The dimensions of the reading screen are the exact same for both Nook and Kindle. The size of the Nook device is 7.7" x 4.9" x.5". The Kindle is now 7.5" x 4.8" x.335".

Touch Screen Vs. Push Button Navigation- The Nook has a 1" touch screen navigation menu as well as the push-button navigation for page turning, etc. The Kindle 3 is still sticking to it's push-button technology only as the means to navigate text and titles.

Wi-Fi, 3G, and International Usage- The Nook has free Wi-Fi in AT&T hotspots and Barnes and Noble stores. 3G only works in the US. The Kindle connects free to AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots, as well as other free Wi-Fi hotspots. The Kindle works wirelessly across 100 countries and territories in the world.

So once again the ebook market is shaken up by innovation. You can see above there is quite a difference when comparing the Kindle 2 Vs. the new Kindle 3. Now the Nook vs Kindle 3 battle has begun. How will the consumer respond? Time will tell.

The Nook Vs Kindle 3 Vs Sony Reader Touch Edition PRS-350: And the Winner Is?

If you are hunting down the best eBook reader, then it makes sense to take a look at the top 3 eBook readers on the market, the Nook, Kindle 3, and Sony Reader. The New Sony Reader PRS-350 is the most comparably priced with the Kindle 3 and Nook, and that's why we'll include it here in this comparison. Which is best? Let's take a look.

barnes and noble coupon

The Barnes and Noble Nook-

BARNES AND NOBLE

The Nook was released last fall and has undergone a major upgrade in software since in late April. There are 2 versions available for purchase, the WiFi only (9) and the WiFi +3G (9).

The Kindle 3-

The Kindle 3 is Amazon's latest release of their flag-ship product. Like the Nook, there are 2 versions available for purchase, the WiFi only (9) and the WiFi + 3G (9).

The Sony Reader Touch Edition PRS-350-

This is Sony's newest model of eBook reader that is comparably priced to the Nook and Kindle (9).

Let's take a look at how features compare with the Nook Vs Kindle 3 Vs Sony Reader.

Memory

Nook- 1,500 books (expandable with SD card)

Kindle 3- 3,500 books (standard)

Reader- 1,200 books (standard)

We can see that the Kindle's standard memory is quite a bit larger than the other two brands. However, for the cost of an SD card, the Nook's memory can be expanded.

Weight

Nook- 12.1 ounces WiFi +3G and 11.1 ounces WiFi

Kindle 3- 8.7 ounces WiFi +3G and 8.5 ounces WiFi

Reader- 5.47 ounces

Dimensions

Nook- 7.7? x 4.9? x 0.5?

Kindle 3- 7.5? x 4.8? x 0.335?

Reader- 5.75? x 4.125? x.34?

The Nook seems to be the "big boy" on the block with its weight heavier and dimensions larger than the other two eBook readers.

Reading Display Screen

Nook- 6" diagonal E-Ink screen.

Kindle 3- 6" diagonal E-Ink screen.

Reader- 5" diagonal E-Ink screen.

Obviously the smallest of these three devices is the Sony Reader, and it translates into a smaller reading screen.

Navigation of Content

Nook- 1" color navigation screen. Push buttons for page turn.

Kindle 3- Push button technology- keyboard and page turn buttons.

Sony Reader- Touch screen navigation and page turn. Home, Page Turn, Zoom, Options push buttons.

Battery Life

Nook- 10 days with wireless off

Kindle 3- 30 days with wireless off

Reader- 14 days

You can see that the Kindle 3 has quite a lot more reading time for one battery charge. This is partly due to the fact that it doesn't utilize touch screen technology. It should also be noted that an AC adapter for the Sony Reader is considered an accessory and costs extra.

Wireless Options

Nook- WiFi only or WiFi +3G (no plans needed)

Kindle 3- WiFi only or WiFi + 3G (no plans needed)

Sony Reader- No Wireless

The big elephant in the room here is, why does the Sony Reader PRS-350 not have wireless?

Conclusion

It boils down to what is important to you in an eBook reader. If you want an extremely small device that is ultra-portable, then perhaps the Sony Reader PRS-350 is for you. But you'd better be fine with downloading your books and content from the computer and transferring it, since wireless is not available.

If you want a little color in your device, wireless downloading, and want a touch screen option, then the Nook is probably a good choice for you. Barnes and Noble has also just announced it allows a Nook owner up to 1 hour of reading of any eBook in the store for a perk.

The Kindle 3 is a small, compact, wireless option with robust features. This will be a good idea for the reader who wants a simple device and wants to save as much money as possible.

Where to Buy Law Books

While I would be tempted to suggest that you buy your law books from the local bookstore, the kind of deals that can be had online can't be matched by most physical sellers.

Let's face it: text books are expensive, and law books even more so. In fact, the increasing cost of text books is the reason for the mushrooming of online text book sellers that sell books at much cheaper rates than stores like Barnes & Noble or your local University store.

BARNES AND NOBLE TEXTBOOK STORE NYC

An obvious place to start off your search is Amazon. The online retail giant is virtually synonymous with books, and I've yet to come across a book that wasn't available at Amazon. With their recent emphasis on used books, you can usually find a pretty good deal if you search hard enough.

Speaking of used books and deals, the place to go has to be Half.com. Half.com is a service by eBay geared primarily to selling used books, CDs, DVDs, etc. If you are willing to compromise on the condition of the book, you can find deals starting as low as 1 cent. If mint condition is not your thing, then I would seriously recommend this website.

For those of you who have an ear for audio books, do check out Audible.com. Their collection of eBooks is vast, although the same can't be said for their text books. But a search might prove fruitful.

Another exciting new ebook retailer is Chegg. You might be familiar with Netflix -- you order unlimited DVDs a month, they arrive in the mail in one day, you ship it back to them and get new DVDs on your queue. Chegg basically applies the proven Netflix model to textbooks with some surprisingly solid deals all sorts of text books.

Other book retailers to consider would be AbeBooks and Alibris. If you're using Alibris, make sure to search online for their latest coupons; you can usually shave off a couple of books off your total cost with a simple coupon code.

There are also a few online retailers that specialize in only law books, like LawBooks.com, Wildys.com, and Nolo.com. These often have those hard to find books in stock.

Amazon also made an announcement a few weeks back that it will start stocking law books for the Amazon Kindle. The Kindle is a wonderful ebook reader, and a must for any book lover or serious reader. Although you'll miss the ability to scribble notes along the page margins, the Kindle's capacity to hold thousands of books in a package thinner than an iPhone really makes it a worthwhile investment.

Last but not the least, hit your college's website and ask around for book exchanges, or other students selling off their books. You can at least inspect the books physically if you are apprehensive about buying online. Bookswap.com is one great site for text book exchanges, so is the local section of Craigslist.

The key is to find just the right deal viz-a viz your own time and effort. Look around all the major textbook retailers before you decide to buy though; a little bit of research can cost you anything from to 0.

Medical Schools in the Caribbean

If you tell yourself that you want to be a medical student and establish that as your goal, it narrows down your choice among all the available options offered by institutions of higher education. Not only is this decision admirable, it also allows us to see that despite the number of medical-profession hopefuls, a lot more still want to become a member of this noble and respected profession. However, the desire to practice medicine though may be considered as the ultimate ambition for some, is only the first step. You have to come down with the reality that studying for a specialty takes time, and would take a lot more during clinical training, certification, and licensing before you can eventually practice and call yourself a doctor. Moreover, you have to be financially prepared once you are decided to spend the rest of your days practicing the profession you always dreamed of. But foremost among these challenges is making the right decision on knowing what medical school to get into.

Getting an M.D. degree is not the final goal of every medical student as this can be secured anywhere. The decisive factor is attaining a residency where you could practice your profession. It is imperative that you choose your medical school wisely since getting into a med school that is not widely accredited and certified means having fewer slots for residency.

BARNES AND NOBLE TEXTBOOK STORE NYC

One of the options to secure a residency is to get into a good med school in the Caribbean and then move on to the US to practice medicine. Caribbean boasts a good number of medical schools that offer quality and reliable educational programs in the field of medicine.

A note to be considered, this article does not attempt to provide a full-blown guide to the med schools in the Caribbean but only highlights some of the top-performing schools and what they offer so that you, our reader, will gain information regarding the services, program, and nature of the institutions in the region.

MEDICAL SCHOOLS IN THE CARIBBEAN

The American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC), located in Saint Maarten in the Netherlands Antilles, is one of the med schools recognized by the US Department of Education as having similar academic standards as the US med schools belonging to the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the organization that accredits schools of medicine in the US. More than that, AUC is approved by the Medical Board of California, Texas Medical Board, New York State Board of Medicine, and Florida Department of Education's Commission for Independent Education. This is really impressive since the states of New York, New Jersey, Florida, and California demand a stringent accreditation process. Because of this, American citizens registered in AUC are qualified for student loans.

Two years of basic medical sciences and two years of clinical training at associated hospitals in the US and UK comprise the medical education curriculum of AUC. An accelerated program is also available which can be taken in only 38 months. Upon completion of the program, you have to get registered in Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), and then obtain a residency in the US.

The Ross University School of Medicine offers a 4-year medical program in Dominica, after which advanced clinical medicine and clinical training may be accomplished in the country or in the US (Michigan, or Miami, Florida). Just like AUC, Ross is accredited in New York, New Jersey, California, and Florida. In this manner, medical students in Ross are authorized to get a residency in American Hospitals. The continuous expansion and growth of the school and its affiliates quantifies its appeal among prospective medical students. Not to mention the high number of residencies it places among US hospitals.

In the Caribbean island of Saba in the Netherlands Antilles, the Saba University School of Medicine offers a thorough curriculum in medical education, patterned from leading medical schools in the US. Just like the above-mentioned schools, Saba is accredited by the Medical Board of California, New York State Board of Medicine, and Florida Department of Education's Commission for Independent Education. The med school also fosters a dynamic conglomeration of demographically diverse student population. The med school is also passionate in maintaining its small student-faculty ratio to preserve the level of the quality of medical program it offers.

St. George's University School of Medicine in Grenada has a number of affiliate teaching hospitals and clinical centers in the US and UK where the students can engage in a more advanced clinical training when the curriculum progresses into the final stage of the medical program, which is approved in New York, New Jersey, California, Texas, and Florida.

Currently, the school has an exclusive contract with the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation to provide training slots for the students of St. George. This affiliation secures the advanced training of medical students that is required in the curriculum of the school.

Here is a list of other medical schools found in the Caribbean:

o American Global University School of Medicine (Belize)
o American International School of Medicine (Guyana)
o American University of Antigua (Antigua)
o American University of the Caribbean (St. Maarten)
o Central American Health Sciences University (Belize)
o Grace University School of Medicine (Belize)
o International University of the Health Sciences (St. Kitts)
o Medical University of the Americas (Nevis)
o Ross University School of Medicine (Dominica)
o Saba University School of Medicine (Saba)
o Saint Theresa's Medical University (St. Kitts)
o Spartan Health Sciences University (St. Lucia)
o St. George's University School of Medicine (Grenada)
o St. James School of Medicine (Bonaire)
o St. Martinus (Curacao)
o St. Mary's School of Medicine (St. Lucia)
o Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara School of Medicine (Mexico)
o Universidad Iberoamericana (Santo Domingo)
o University of Health Sciences (Antigua)
o University of Medicine and Health Sciences (St. Kitts)
o University of Sint Eustasius Medical School (St. Eustasius)
o Windsor University School of Medicine (St. Kitts)

Getting into a Caribbean medical school presents a number of advantages. Cost-wise, the tuition is more reasonable. But you may have to put things into perspective since part of the educational cost involves travel expense and insurance. In addition, there are three application periods per year. Lastly, many of the schools in the Caribbean models their curriculum from US medical schools, allowing greater chances of accreditation should med students decide to obtain residencies in the US.

In the other end of the spectrum, reality check states that not all of the Caribbean med schools are accredited in the US. Furthermore, the medium of instruction of some schools is Spanish, that's why learning how to speak the language is a requirement prior to acceptance to the medical school.

All things considered, simply saying that you will paint a portrait is obviously different from actually doing it. Having the best brush and using the most expensive paint accounts to nothing if no action to start painting begins. Needless to say, the initiative to start painting is evidently not the same as finishing the task. So whatever choice you make, be willing to face the challenges, surpass all obstacles, and emerge victorious. Medical school is tough, that is a given. But you can be tougher. Just keep in mind; it's not the brush or the paint that makes a painting great... it's the painter!

Handheld Ebook Reader Wars - eReader Formats Or eReader Discount

It is becoming increasingly clear that the big battle, in the handheld ebook reader war, is going to be more about eReader formats than eReader discounts.

barnes and noble stores

Look at the facts. The Nook (Barnes and Noble) and the Daily Edition (Sony), recent releases in to the wireless section of the market, were in danger of cleaning up the very important Christmas sales. But, and it pains me to say it, they have given the Kindle a way back in the short term anyway.

BARNES AND NOBLE

The Nook and the Daily Edition, in fact the whole Sony range, have taken the massive step to include support not only for the Adobe PDF standard but also for the emerging ePub file format. When put like that, it does not seem that important but let me explain further without getting overly technical.

eReader formats allow the handheld ebook reader to handle (read) a specific file format. Perhaps the most common or recognizable to everyone would be the mp3 format. This is an audio format, so if your reader handles.mp3 you can play that format, not the best example I grant you but incidentally most devices do handle mp3. Now two formats that are popular not only for free content but as importantly used by online book stores to distribute text based content, are the.pdf and.epub formats.

It makes sense then, if you want to take advantage of the vast amount of public domain (free) content, that your device has support for these file formats. And you would assume also that manufacturers would be keen to give you these, after all without them you can not shop about for your content. But you may be surprise to learn this was not always the case. Both Sony and the Amazon Kindle started out using proprietary (their own protected) file formats, Sony used the.lrf extension and Amazon the.azw format. Neither offered the.pdf format and the Amazon Kindle offered the mobi pocket format, if you wanted.pdf support you had to turn over the extra to purchase the DX. Sony soon caught up from catching a cold, realized the error of their ways and released a free software update for their prs505 reader.

Then came the second generation handheld ebook readers. Kindle led the way, back in February 09, when they released their Kindle 2. More of an update than anything ground breaking really and again no natural support for ePub or surprisingly the Adobe PDF standard, opting instead to stick with mobi pocket for free content and once again, disappointing, their proprietary AZW standard.

Fast forward then to the back end of the summer, and in the midst of Amazon starting to offer eReader discounts, Sony unveiled their new Edition range. ePub and PDF support, matching Amazon the price of best sellers and increasing the number of titles available at the Sony Book Store. They also offered an entry level model packed with those features for an incredible 9.

Then hard on Sony's heels and later in the year Barnes and Noble brought out the Nook. Wireless connectivity, touch enabled navigation screen and importantly for consumers, epub and pdf support. Brave move as B&N are the biggest high street bookstore and make their money selling books and here they are saying go buy your books from any place you like.

I hope you can see now how it is very important to know which ereader formats are supported by the handheld ebook reader you're thinking of purchasing. Yes price is important, and a trip over to my ebook reader review site will help you in that area, but don't fall in to the trap of purchasing on the size of ereader discount given by the manufacturer over the ereader formats your chosen device will support.

Finding a Good Online Bookstore

If you're looking to buy a new book, be it fiction, non-fiction, textbooks or anything else, you should considering buying your books online. There are several reasons for this. Most notably, buying books from a brick and mortar book store is usually much more expensive. You can buy from a local book store or a larger book chain like Barnes and Noble or Borders, but you're likely paying a premium. Many times they don't offer any discounts unless you pay a yearly membership fee.

As an alternative, you should consider buying your books online. You can buy new books or like-new used books on the internet for much cheaper thank books from a regular book store. Moreover, the internet offers many additional bonuses that you can't have in a regular book store:

Convenience - If you buy books online, the main thing you have is convenience. When shopping online, you have the convenience of comparing prices, shopping around, and simply ordering from you home.

Comparability - When shopping on the internet, you can also compare the prices and versions of the books on the internet. This allows you to get the best price for your book. You can easily find the best book store [http://www.bestbookstore.org] online by looking at the prices of books.

Buy Used - Usually you can't buy used books in person. However, with internet stores like ebay and smaller genre-based book stores you can buy used books. This allows you to save a lot of money, get a good deal, and still receive a like-new, high quality book.

Barnes & Noble Nook Reader Review - Is the Nook E-Reader Better Than Kindle?

I spend a lot of time browsing shops in Orlando because, well, that's where I live, and book stores are high on my list of fun places to shop and while away some hours. The other day I was meeting my mom for lunch and decided to drop in to Barnes & Noble since I don't have one close to my house. As I was checking out with my purchases, the cashier mentioned that the store would be debuting the new nook reader which is an electronic reading device "gadget."

barnes and noble leather bound books

This caught my attention because I had just been considering putting the Kindle on my Christmas list this year. You know how it is when you log into Amazon, you always see the advertisements for their electronic reader right in your face, and eventually you become brainwashed where you suddenly decide you MUST have one of those (insert name of new gadget here). That's what happened to me with Kindle I think. And I'll be honest with you, I really didn't know a whole lot about it.

BARNES AND NOBLE

So when I heard about the nook reader that B&N is about to unveil, I asked the check-out lady a few questions and then when I got home I decided to check it out on the website. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it actually appears to have more features than Kindle.

So here's the lowdown. They both have 6-inch screen displays so they are easy to read, you can adjust the text size with both devices, and both of them feature 2 GB memory, ability to browse and shop for ebooks, speakers, headphone jack, rechargeable battery, comparable weight, software updates, quick page turn by hard key, synchronized last page read between devices, and ability to read your books on multiple devices.

But, here's what you get on the nook reader that is not available on the "other reader." Color touch screen, touch control and navigation ability, library view by book cover, Wi-Fi, free Wi-Fi in Barnes & Noble stores, expandable memory, more than a million titles, more than half a million free ebooks, exclusive content at B&N, directly load and read PDF's (very helpful), synchronized notes between devices, "LendMe technology" which is where you can share books between nook, iPhone, iPod touch, Blackberry, PC, and Mac, and a replaceable battery.

Sounds good, right? I was impressed. In addition, and this is really key, you can go into Barnes and Noble and try out the nook in person. You can hold it in your hands. Studies have shown that this is key in allowing buyers to make a decision on a purchase. You can sell a lot more when the person can touch as well as see.

I have to say I'm really interested in the nook reader and to be honest, I think it really wins in the head-to-head battle with Kindle by a landslide. Of course, I have not tried out the actual device yet but it will be in stores at the end of November (so I was told). So if you are considering an E-reader you should check out the nook when it becomes available, either for yourself or maybe as a gift.

The Amazon Kindle 3G Vs the Barnes & Noble Nook - Who Will Win the Holiday Shopping War?

If you have been considering an e-book reader for yourself or as a gift, the choice between the Amazon Kindle 3G with Wi-Fi and the Barnes & Noble Nook will be a tough one. The reviews show that both products are terrific e-Readers but it is the differences and your personal preferences that will make your decision. Priced at 9 for the Kindle 3G and 9 for the Nook your decision will be based on your choice of features.

barnes and noble stores

Both units have 6 inch diagonal E-Ink electronic displays, with 600 x 800 pixel resolution. The weights are comparable, the Kindle at 10.2 ounces and the Nook at 12.1 ounce. And the actual unit sizes are 8″ x 5.3 for the Kindle and 7.7″ x 4.9 for the Nook. Both have an internal memory of 2GB but the Nook has an expandable micro SD slot which would only be necessary if you think you need to store more than the 1,500 books that the 2GB will hold.

BARNES AND NOBLE

Battery life is also similar, 10 days or 7,500 page turns, with the wireless off. And both completely recharge between 3.5 and 4 hours. Both units can be used as an MP3 player, the Kindle with built in stereo speakers and the Nook with built-in mono speakers. Both also have headphone jacks.

Here is where your preferences will make the difference. The Amazon Kindle has a keyboard at the bottom, it does not display in color but has a 16-level gray-scale that does a great job with images. The Barnes & Noble Nook has a color touch screen at the bottom. So do you prefer typing on a keyboard or touch screen?

And here is the big one - the Kindle 3G with Wi-Fi uses Amazon's Whispernet through Sprint's 3G high-speed data network for U.S. wireless coverage. No charge involved. And there is expanded coverage available if you are traveling internationally. The Nook has free wireless via AT&T, and free Wi-Fi in all Barnes & Noble stores. If you intend on down loading books while traveling service from these providers would have to be available.

The Kindle has an additional feature, Text-to-Speech. You can switch from reading a book to listening to it with the audio book reader. You can enlarge the print with both units. The Kindle's screen is less reflective than the other e-book readers which eliminates the problems that reading off a screen in the sunshine can create. The Nook's screen is ranked better than most of the competitors but not better than the Kindle. Where will you be reading?

So here we are. What are your preferences? What type of keyboard, and whose wireless carrier do you prefer. Both the Kindle 3G and the Nook e-Book readers have great reviews and thousands of books available. Good luck with your choices and happy shopping.

Audio Book Online - Finding Reputable Vendors

Buying audio books over the internet is just the same as purchasing any other items online. You are looking for a combination of large selections, easy navigation through the online book store, good prices and most importantly, the best in online security.

barnes and noble book store

Any online buyer or customer would want to give out their personal information, credit card numbers and financial details with the confidence that the vendors they are giving it to are legitimate and are big-time audio book vendors with better things to do that steal anyone's identity. All of the audio book purchasing choices provided below represent just that, and you will immediately know that these are online names and book selling firms are reliable.

BARNES AND NOBLE

1. Amazon.com

In any online vendor list, Amazon.com will surely be one of the firsts to be considered. Amazon allows people to buy audio recorded books from the online store through a third-party independent seller. These vendors are most of the time reputable book stores located somewhere in America who sell items, both new and old. Amazon ranks their items according to "new and used" rankings and price.

Amazon does not use PayPal, so you will be buying books with your credit card. But given that it is Amazon.com, you are assured that your transactions are safe.

2. Amazon Kindle

Amazon Kindle is one of the newest ways to buy audio recorded books over the internet. Amazon.com has the new "kindle" electronic books option, perfect for buying both audio and electronic books. Kindle books are not paper and ink books, but downloaded e-books and audio books that are placed on an electronic device known as a Kindle.

3. eBay.com

eBay offers buyers a chance to find and bid on cheap and older books that someone is trying to sell. You will find a lot of serendipitous items in the Bay. Because of the nature of auctions, you may find some audio books a bit overpriced, while others are unbelievably good deals. Most used books and second-hand audio books will come in on the cheap side, although you have to include the shipping charges as an additional expense.

You will be using PayPal most of the time if you wish to buy from eBay.com. PayPal is an online money transfer service made by people from eBay.com, which has become a standard internet money transfer tool for transactions outside of eBay as well.

4. Barnes and Noble Online

Barnes&Noble is the premier online book seller in the entire world, literally and virtually speaking. However, cheapskates might not be as pleased with Barnes and Noble because most of their books come with a price. Barnes and Noble offer special collections together with their regular (long) list of genres.

10 Reasons Why the Nook is Better Than the Kindle - Battle of the eBook Readers

I have to admit, I shop a lot from Amazon.com. So much to say that I consider myself an Amazolic. I think it is because I believe that they have the best collection of DVDs, clothes, gadgets, electronics, books, and just about everything else that one would want to shop online for. However, I got a little flimsy about Amazon after the homepage turned into a one item promotion page for their eBook eReader, The Kindle. It is almost as if they are playing some kind mind-trick on their visitors. Make them see the Kindle enough times that a percentage of people who visit Amazon.com end up psychologically convincing themselves to give in and buy the eBook Reader.

barnes and noble stores

That is when I saw an article on Kindle getting a new competitor in the eBook Reader market, the Barnes and Noble Nook. As if on auto-pilot, I found myself on BarnesandNoble.com and was pleasantly surprised to see that the homepage was not plastered with a huge posting on an eBook Reader. In fact, there was a small 2x2 inch ad reading, "Nook, The World's Most Advanced eBook Reader: Learn More" on the right of the page. And that was it! No mind games, no tricks, just a simple, genuine ad that definitely caught my eye.

BARNES AND NOBLE

The early pre-orders are expected to be delivered by mid-December, which is a slight delay as Barnes and Noble admitted to be getting a high demand for their eReaders. If you still have not placed your order, no need to worry, you will get your new eBook Reader in early January.

Here are 10 reasons why the Nook triumphs over the Kindle:

Goes easy on the eyes. There is no glare or backlight that some complained about the Kindle, and with the adjustable text size, you can read on for hours without the discomfort of your eyes being tired out. Sample eBooks for free. Size, Display and Specifications. Compact Size - The Nook is about the same size and weight as an average sized paperback book. Expandable Storage - With 2GB built-in memory, the Nook can store about 1,500 eBooks. However with a microSD memory card slot, this number is pushed up to 17,500 eBooks. Paper-like Display - The most advanced E-ink Vizplex electronic paper display that reads like the printed page and you can read an eBook in bright sunlight as clearly as inside your home Color Touchscreen - 3.5 inch color touchscreen LCD that offers one-touch control and navigation. The Kindle has a gray-scale display. Fast and Free Wireless - Fast and Free wireless from Barnes & Noble via AT&T, the nation's fastest 3G network. Supported File Types - Very flexible options that include EPUB and eReader Formats, PDFs, MP3s and graphics that load to your Nook from your computer or micro SD card and JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP files are used to create personal screen savers. Personalized Screen Saver - Customize your nook quickly and easily by loading your own photos or using the many default pictures. Powerful Battery - You can read for up to ten days without recharging (with wireless off). Charging is done via USB to computer system or power adapter.Cost-efficient At just 0, the Barnes and Noble Nook Ebook Reader is the same price as Amazon's Kindle 2, but you get so much more for your money. You get Wi-Fi, an SD slot, native PDF support and that extra double screen makes it seem eons out of the Kindle's league. Easy to Lend and Share Your eBooks with Friends and Family. One of the main objections that users of the Kindle and other older eReaders have is that people prefer to to get the majority of their eBooks from their friends or family, rather than buying them from bookstores, which all these previous eReaders do not really have much flexibility with. The Nook realizes that people do like to share their eBooks and allows for a 2-week lending period - plenty of time to read a book. Also, you can lend a book from your Nook to tons of different devices: Mac, PC, iPhone, iPod Touch, PC, Mac, BlackBerry, or Windows Mobile (soon). Double Screen. With the traditional single screen that is seen in all the eBook eReaders prior to the Barnes and Noble Nook eBook eReader, browsing for books was a workout on its own and often a frustration. But with its capacitive double touchscreen, the Nook offers a keyboard and Cover-Flow-esque browsing that takes away the awkwardness and lethargy of e-ink, and more importantly, it opens the door for multitasking. You will be able to read a book and control your music at the same time, and since the music browser will be on the LCD screen, it will not look like some e-inked crap. It will also support photo browsing and the ability to set your own wallpaper. Battery Life. The Barnes and Noble Nook eBook Reader comes with a 10-day battery life, which might not be just as long as the Kindle 2's 14 days, but with all the extra features it comes along with, you have to admit, 10 days is still more than enough time to read a book. Android Integration - Leads to Endless Possibilities. B&N seem to be open to apps being introduced to the Nook, which will take your user experience to a whole new level when compared to the Kindle and other existing eReaders. Picture this: Your iPod merged with an eBook reader - that is exactly what the Nook eReader will feel like. Largest eBook Collection. With over 1 million titles to choose from, the eBooks will be available through the Barnes and Noble eBookStore and will delivered through the 3G wireless network. Thousands of older titles are free, and many new releases are as low as .99.

I should also mention that the accessories for the Nook are looking hot as you have the option of personalising your Nook with rubberized plastic covers, leather cases with button straps, and artistic sleeve covers are just some of the looks you can use to brand your Nook as truly yours.

I am very interested in the Nook eReader as I do a lot of reading and to be honest, how cool would it be to be doing some bedtime reading with a light-weight Nook, not having to switch arms because you are getting tired of holding a traditional, heavy book.

Functions Of Business Management

It has been said that leaders do the right thing and managers do things right. While this is a subtle distinction between leaders and managers, in business, it can be the determining factor between failure and success. Unfortunately, it is one that often goes disregarded. Typically, the term management refers to the actions involved in four common functions of business: planning, organizing, leading and coordinating of resources. In order to better recognize and fully appreciate the functions of a manager and how they operate, one must first understand what the basic functions of management are.

barnes and noble leather bound books

Whether the system is an organization, department, business or project, the planning process typically includes similar activities that are carried out in some sort of sequential order. Often, a plan is implemented in a cautious and well defined manner. Part of the planning process involves some sort of organizational behavior. Organizing is typically viewed as activities utilized in an effort to collect and configure resources in order to implement plans in an efficient fashion. The role of an organizer involves a broad set of activities, and is often though of as one of the major functions of a successful manager. Organization can span many aspects of business.

BARNES AND NOBLE

While organization plays a crucial role within the management ranks, leadership and the ability to lead people must not be taken for granted. A leader can be thought of as someone who provides direction in an effort to influence people to follow a certain direction. Managers are individuals who are able to motivate by using a variety of well established methods such as facilitation, coaching, mentoring, directing, and delegating. Managers that have the ability to lead do so with a wide variety of styles. A great leader must be able to evaluate his or her resources and leverage them accordingly.

In today's business market, managers are in high demand. The world has an endless amount of work to be done and needs all the help it can get; however, one must remain cognizant of the fact that management is not simply a job, but rather an art form. Globally, people can be managed in a similar fashion. The skills of a superior manager remain the same across board. If one can master the four management functions of planning, organizing, leading and coordinating of resources, their opportunities are endless.

The Growing Popularity of E-Books and E-Guides

There are numerous electronic devices on the market that have the ability to access e-books and e-guides. Some of these electronic reading devices are the Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, Bookeen Cybook, Condor eGriver, Havon WISEreader, ICARUS Reader, iRiver Story, Kobo Reader, Samsung Papyrus and Sony Reader just to name a few. These products vary in size, price, capability, and screen shades. You may or may not have heard of all of them but you likely have heard of the two most popular devices - the Amazon Kindle and the Barnes & Noble Nook. Many Smartphones on the market today also have the capability of downloading electronic books.

Popularity of these electronic books
Amazon made the announcement that e-books actually outsold paper books for the first time on Christmas Day 2010. Why are these so popular? There are many reasons. First of all the these are less expensive for the publishers to produce, so they are less expensive for the consumer which is a plus to the consumer in today's economy.

Those who benefits from electronic books
For avid readers the ability to store numerous electronic books in their e-reader and take it with them when they travel is a godsend. Some avid readers would pack a separate bag filled with books when they go on vacation, now their books are contained in one small device. Avid readers also had the problem with the storage of books they purchased; now these books are conveniently inside their e-reader instead of stacked throughout their home.

Commuters and frequent travelers benefit from e-books and e-guides which enable them to carry reading material for both business and pleasure.

Many aspiring authors may now have the chance to get their writing published in an electronic book format when before they had been turned away by the publishing company not willing to risk a large investment on the author.

For those individuals worried about the environment, electronic books do not require trees to be cut down to be made into paper.

Many college textbook publishers are providing students with an alternative to the traditional book by making textbooks available on electronic books. Students that purchase the electronic version of a book will find it less expensive, more convenient because they are not required to carry a heavy textbook in their backpack, and they will not have the frustration of reselling their used book for a fraction of the cost they paid for it no matter what condition it is in.

Individuals with vision problems also benefit from electronic books because they can adjust the text size giving them the option to read books that were never published in large print. As you can see there are several groups of people that have gravitated to e-books and e-guides for several different reasons. Others just naturally gravitate towards electronic books because they are used to reading on the computer screen at work.

When you make the decision to purchase an e-books & e-guides, go online shopping and check out the different brands and models to see what best fits your needs.

The Noble Mind

When one searches for something to believe in and when all around you seems to be false and misleading then I recommend taking a closer look at Noble Virtues. Create your own list of Virtues and keep them simple and try to live your life in accordance with those Virtues.

barnes and noble nook ereader

The understanding of Virtues can awaken the Noble Inspirational Leader Within each of us and as such they can be practiced and developed and cultivated within ourselves for our own benefit and that of others. From the idea of Noble Virtues you can then see that blends with Noble Aspirations that can guide and motivate us to become Leaders of Ourselves and then to become Leaders of Others.

BARNES AND NOBLE

The greatest of all Aspirations is to follow a Noble Cause and this is also a component of this simple and yet effective way of becoming a True Leader or a Noble Leader.

Whatever we are attempting to achieve in our life, from the development of skills or of virtues they all have one thing in common. This commonality is that sometimes along the way we become lost and lose our direction or self confidence and when this happens we can see that "The Assassin Within" us is flourishing. When this happens we need to be aware of all the components of our Self Destructive Nature and then we can begin to realign with our objective.

My philosophy for many years has been that of "awakening the noble leader within" because I believe that we are all born with inherent qualities of goodness and nobility but due to our circumstances and social upbringing and influences we can easily lose the way. When the way is lost or simply forgotten then we are overtaken by all the vices of the World and thus we fall easily into so many self destructive ways. As this happens we become sad and disappointed.

Although there are many ways to climb out of this dilemma I believe that essentially we are all looking for the same thing in life. Our lives can be easily affected by lack of certainty about ourselves such as who we are and what we are doing here. We are also affected by our role in society-our jobs and our relationships with others. These external influences if not managed well can be self destructive.

So what is it that we are looking for? Is it peace or is it wealth or is it virtues?

It is my belief that essentially we should strive to acquire a Noble Mind.

With a Mind that is Noble then we can handle all that goes on in the World around us. A Noble Mind is a Mind of Wisdom that can see things as they really are and not as the way they appear to be. A Noble Mind is one that is always calm and peaceful and not affected by the vices and misdirection of the World. You can ask yourself about the way in which your Mind works. Some people will always see the glass half empty whereas others will always see the same glass as half full or even overflowing. What is the difference? What have they discovered that we have not? Is it genetics or their own upbringing? In some instances I think it can be either or both but even then this way of looking at the World has come to them from others.

But how can we achieve this "Noble Mind"? Some might say that it is beyond human capability. Most humans are too apprehensive about their lives and future and see the World as one of struggle and fighting to maintain a place for them. They see it as survival.

And so we can see that essentially it is one of attitude. With the right attitude much can be accomplished but with the wrong attitude then what could be accomplished would not be so easy and may end in failure. Failure creates more failure. Success creates more success and it all begins with the Mind.

And so I say that we should look for The Noble Mind. The Noble Mind that lies within us all. When we are still and composed and at peace then we can look back into this Mind and see that it's real nature is Noble and this is what we need to find and then to cultivate so that we will never again fall back into the way we were.

Look for the Noble Mind within. When one has discovered and mastered the Noble Mind then no longer do we need to act and pretend our way through life and circumstances. It then becomes the Natural Way for us. Not forcing anything -not thinking about the wrong way or the right way-but just allowing ourselves to follow our Noble Mind.

Of course in order to do this because we are only human we need to practice and cultivate certain ways of living. If we live a life of corruption then we could never have a Noble Mind. If we live a life of deceit or anger or mistrust then we could never have a Noble Mind. So in life we need to follow Noble Virtues and for us our Noble Cause could be simple in that we do not really need to aspire to change all that is wrong in the World but only to find our Noble Mind. When we have found that and can live with our Noble Mind then we will change all that is around us and in so doing have a profound effect on the World.

Nook Vs Kindle

Early in 2010, Amazon changed the market for eReaders by releasing the third generation Kindle to the public. Barnes & Noble also has streamlined and improved the Nook in an attempt to stand up to the Kindle by releasing its Version 1.5 software for Nook users. With all these changes being made to the models, how do the Nook and Kindle stack up against each other? Which one offers more value? Here is a quick comparison of the features that come standard on each.

barnes and noble book store

• Push Button vs. Touch Screen: A Nook features a 1-inch touch screen menu for navigation, and a push button system for things like page turning. The Kindle still relies on general push-button navigation for all their functions.

BARNES AND NOBLE

• International, Wi-Fi and 3G: The Nook offers free Wi-Fi capabilities at any Barnes & Noble AT&T hotspot. Their 3G will only work in the United States. A Kindle will connect for free to any AT&T Wi-Fi hotspot, and also to any other Wi-Fi hotspot. The Kindle also functions wirelessly in over 100 countries across the world.

• Shiny Finish (Good or Bad?): This might seem like a minor thing, but I see many people complaining about the Nook's shiny finish and the fact that it is extremely bothersome in relation to reflections. The Kindle features a less shiny matte finish.

• Altering Fonts: The Kindle features eight font sizes, whereas the Nook has only six. They each feature three different styles of fonts to pick from. Kindle does offer the ability to alter spacing and the quantity of words on each line. This is a great feature if you fashion yourself to be a speed reader.

• Page Numbering: With either of these devices, the concept of numbered pages goes by the wayside. The Nook will give you page numbering, but depending on the font you will have three identical page numbers in a row. The Kindle has a timeline and percentage calculator which will display the percentage of the book that you have completed.

The Keys to a Barnes and Noble Book Signing

Dan Poynter wrote in Successful Nonfiction that authors should never host autograph parties. Instead of merely signing their books, the thing to do was offer "mini-seminars." In an August 27th, 2006 interview with Tee Morris for "The Survival Guide to Writing Fantasy," Annie Hololob, Community Relations Manager for the Harrisonburg, VA Barnes & Noble, confirms the value of making your book signing into an event. (Tee himself apparently has a habit of staging sword fights during his book signings, which definitely livens things up.)If you want to have an event at a Barnes & Noble, the Community Relations Manager is the person to talk to. This is the person who knows whether the store's customers are the right market for your book, or whether you'd do better at a store in a different city. (My local Barnes & Noble, for instance, doesn't even have author events, just a children's story time.) This is the person whose good side you want to get on.

barnes and noble nook color

There are two important things you need before you start assembling your press kit and cultivating the CRM at your local Barnes & Noble, however. Without them, there's no way the store can carry your books. Large chain bookstores have to operate by certain rules in order to stay in business, and those rules may exclude you and your book for reasons that have nothing to do with your merits as a writer.

BARNES AND NOBLE

Distribution

In order for BN to order, stock, and sell your books, they have to be available through a wholesaler or distributor such as Ingram or Baker & Taylor--one BN already has a relationship with. That means BN can buy the book at a wholesale price, usually 40-60% off the cover price, without going to extra trouble to special-order it. If your book is traditionally published, there should be no problem with this. One of the reasons for choosing to go with a major publisher or established small press is that they are already BN Vendors of Record. The traditionally self-published, those like Dan Poynter who start their own publishing companies, can become Vendors of Record by filling out the BN Publisher Information Form.

The authors who run into real trouble in the distribution department are those with POD books. These books may be good-looking and high quality. They may even be available through Baker & Taylor or Ingram. But unless ordered in very high quantities, they are offered only for the retail price. BN's standard order when dealing with a new publisher is two copies of every title. Even an order of 30-50 books for a signing isn't going to provide enough of a profit margin to make it worth the bookstore's while. And because Print on Demand books are literally printed only when ordered, each copy is much more expensive to produce than a comparable mass-produced book.

Returns

The other thing that keeps POD books-and their authors-out of chain stores like Barnes & Noble is the lack of a returns policy. Bookstores expect to be able to return all unsold books to a publisher, and not to pay the publisher for any of the books until after they sell. Unsold books aren't even returned intact: the covers get ripped off and they're sent away to be pulped. (I kid you not. I was horrified to learn this, even after reading all those warnings about not buying books without covers.)

POD houses don't warehouse books and can't provide that kind of returns policy, and very few self-published authors are going to want to. But no matter how barbaric a practice pulping is, it's a fact of life at all major book outlets, and Barnes & Noble didn't invent it. Nor does a Community Relations Manager have the power to bend the rules about this, however flexible s/he may be about the form your signing takes if you can meet the store's requirements.

Alternatives

If you're a self-published or POD author and touring the major chain bookstores is something you can't live without, you can try to interest a traditional publisher in your book, though you need to make sure that you really own the book in its current form before you do this. (Most POD houses lay claim to the final, formatted version of your book, though the content remains yours.)

Or you can skip Barnes & Noble altogether and hold your book events elsewhere. Independent bookstores are often in a better position than large chains to take a chance on an author, though they, too, need to be able to buy the books at a low enough price to make a profit. Public libraries are almost always willing to accept the donation of a book or two and host a reading.

And, of course, if you make your living as a speaker, back-of-room sales may be your best bet and an opportunity to take advantage of the plus side of self-publishing and POD: getting to keep a far greater percentage of the book's retail price.

Book Signing Resources

Unfortunately, it appears that the 2005 episodes of The Survival Guide to Writing Fantasy podcast are no longer available on the show blog, but should you be able to track them down, you want episode 003 and episode 021.

The New Barnes and Noble NOOKcolor in Review

If you are looking for a full-color eReader with the ability to display color materials as well as standard black and white, then the NOOKcolor is definitely an eReader you should consider. Perfect for the avid reader who enjoys magazines as well as novels, or the student looking for a more compact and portable manner for accessing their textbooks, the NOOKcolor comes with many additional features.

barnes and noble stores

Readers have asked for a better touch screen interface and the designers of the device heeded the call. Unlike the original Nook, the 7 inch screen is also a very good touch screen interface. The interface is highly responsive, although it can be disrupted by fingerprints. I recently discovered this during a game of Sodoku, which happens to come pre-installed.

BARNES AND NOBLE

The NOOKcolor's organization is automatic and most readers will be happy with the library features that catalog books according to title, author or genre.

Speaking of games, many of the ads for the device stress the fact that it has an Android operating system. This is true, but perhaps a bit misleading. The Android OS is a hybrid of Android 2.1, meaning that the device cannot take advantage of the Android Marketplace or any of the previously designed applications. There is a developer toolkit available and Barnes and Noble says applications will be available soon.

This is not a downfall for those who intent to use the eReader as it was intended, to read books. The interface and display are excellent for anyone who wants a high quality LCD display that offers brilliant color and crisp text. Of course, LCD screens are linked to eyestrain and are not effective for use in bright sunshine. Also, battery life is known to be affected by LCD screens. The device offers excellent battery life, however.

The device does not have built in 3G and relies on a WiFi connection to enable users to purchase or download books to the device. There is a built in beta version web browser that provides access to the internet where a WiFi connection is available. Other eReaders come with built in 3G networking, but with the wide availability of wireless networks it is not really necessary.

Keep Your Child Learning Over the Summer

Summer is coming up soon, and that means that your children will be on break for a couple of months from school. Summer vacation is a great time to have quality adventures and vacations with your children. Take a nice trip somewhere and enjoy the nice weather. However, summer also means that they aren't in school, learning every day. Over summer break, a lot of children forget the information that they learned during the past year, which can lead to a very slow start when they enter the next grade of school. Here are some fun things to do with your children over the summer to keep their brains stimulated.

Read often. There are always excuses to go to the library or book store and read some new books. Just because a child isn't in school any longer doesn't mean that they can't continue reading and learning during the break. You don't have to force them to get books that are difficult, but just have them read some books so that they continue their learning process.

BARNES AND NOBLE TEXTBOOK STORE NYC

Do math. Math is one of the most difficult subjects for a student to grasp, so it's really important that you make sure that they are keeping up with math even over the summer. Maybe just do a few flashcards from time to do, or possibly show them some math problems once a week. Allow them to have a relaxing summer break, but also keep them updated on what they learned over the summer so it doesn't go to waste.

Kindle Software

For those of you who travel a lot, and love to read whenever the opportunity is available, there is a convenient product called the Kindle. Kindle is developed by Amazon, and it's a platform that is considered software/hardware.

The applications for are made for Windows, iOS, Blackberry, Mac OS X and the Android. The Kindle was first released in the USA on November 19, 2007. The Kindle hardware uses a certain type of paper and ink that has 16 different tones of gray. The kindle is able to download content from Amazon's Whispernet using the Sprint EVDO network. However, the newer versions of Kindle uses AT&T's network. All of this is done by a wireless connection.

BARNES AND NOBLE TEXTBOOK STORE NYC

The Kindle hardware device is built to be used without any computer connection, and Amazon Whispernet is open to any user without any recurrent fee or wireless subscription. In fact, all the Kindle models offer free access to the Internet in the U.S.A. by the use of cellular networks (as mentioned earlier.)

On March 03, 2009 Amazon.com launched a newer application called Kindle for iPhone that was available for customers in the iTunes App Store. This allowed iPhone and iPod Touch owners to read Kindle content on the device. Through special technology called "Whispersync", customers can read books or content that has been uploaded to the device. Amazon announced the Kindle DX on May 06, 2009.

This particular version has a larger screen than its previous generation, and it also handles simple PDF files. A convenient thing about this version is that it is also is the thinnest device that offers an accelerometer, which allows the user to effortlessly rotate pages between landscape and portrait directions whenever the Kindle DX has to be turned on its side. It is advertised as more fit for displaying newspaper and textbook content.Amazon has also released a Kindle package for the PC and Macintosh that is free of charge. This allows the users to read Kindle books on a computer that has either a Windows or MAC operating systems.

This device is a bit on the pricey side, but they are a good investment for those who would enjoy the convenience of having all of their books on one handy device.

Barnes And Noble Nook - A Patient's Perspective

The Nook reader that my father-in-law has is the original Nook, not the NookColor. I sat down with him to find out first if he was using it and what features were helpful or not helpful in his desire to keep reading.

barnes and noble locations

1. Font Size

BARNES AND NOBLE

The Barnes and Noble Nook offers 6 font sizes. My father-in-law has it set at the largest font size which is sufficient for him to be able to read comfortably.

2. Anti-Glare Screen

I do a lot of reading on my Apple iPad so when I read from the Nook, I was amazed at the difference that an anti-glare screen provides. There is so much less strain on the eyes. The e-ink they use is like reading from a paper - there is no glare and this electronic book reader can be read in bright light.

3. Contrast

The letters and words were very crisp and clear. Contrast can be adjusted to one of 16 different levels of a gray scale.

4. Navigation

One would think that the touch screen navigation would be an easy way to use the ebook reader. However my father-in-law still had trouble finding his books and library even after several times of reviewing this with him. As with all electronic book readers, the Nook will automatically go to the last page that was read. So as long as he was reading just that one book and not trying to find his other books, he was fine.

5. Screen Size

When I showed him my Apple iPad and had him read from this ebook reader, he did prefer the larger screen size. The Apple iPad screen is 9.7" diagonal and the original Nook is 6" diagonal.

6. Return Policy

My father-in-law will be keeping his Nook. He can read from it which is exciting, but will he, I am not sure. The return policy at this time with Barnes and Noble is that it can be returned within 14 days - so if you are buying it for someone else be sure to have them try it right away or even better take them to a store to try it.

The new ebook reader technology is great for those with macular degeneration, but how much the older senior population will adapt to it for their reading is uncertain. To learn more about the features of this electronic book reader go to:

Teaching English As A Foreign Language

My friend Sarah lives about three hours north of New York City, and is teaching English as a foreign language to four young women who work in a Chinese restaurant in the nearby town. They meet once a week, with the girls coming in to Sarah's living room with the delicious odors of shrimp and fried rice trailing them. Sarah finds that audio books are very helpful in this process, for hearing the same words and phrases repeated over and over plants the words very firmly in their minds. The four young women are all smiles and giggles, and sometimes Sarah thinks that her teaching English as a foreign language class is more a game to them. But after she hears that the two audio books she gave them were fought over by the four girls, she realized how serious they were about their studies. When Sarah visited the restaurant and listened, she realized that most of the conversation in the restaurant was not in English, for both the staff and the customers. Sarah was one of the few Americans in the place. The importance of hearing English daily through those audio books was very important, almost as much as her teaching English as a foreign language to them.

One aspect that she truly liked about the audio book was its agreement with her methods of teaching English as a foreign language. Sarah liked to begin with daily conversations, and emphasize the "give and take" of simple conversations. The audio book's structure had the same format, using simple conversations as a tool for correct word pronunciation. It pleased and astonished Sarah that the girls learned a true American sound very quickly, even before they realized the real meanings of the phrases. The first conversations that Sarah had taught were simple waitress phrases, but after the visit to the restaurant she decided that she preferred the audio book's emphasis on simple daily conversations. In addition, the girls got great fun out of "conversing" with each other, and "conversing" with the audio book, and dissolving into fits of giggles. Maybe the humor was a bit obscure, but teaching English as a second language was turning out to be great fun.

TEXTBOOK STORE NYC

There certainly was a more serious side to this too. Employees of small Chinese restaurants like this who do not learn English simply remain as restaurant workers, and can get moved to other states as the need for employees in those places increases. Having someone teach English as a foreign language allows them to choose to remain in the area if they wish, and increases the girls chances of eventually choosing another career. Whether or not the girls thought about all of this, they did cherish their audio books of English conversation and pronunciation as true treasures. Teaching English as a second language had become an important part of Sarah's life and a very important foundation stone in the girls' lives. Their audio books would probably be a treasured memento for years, long past the time they were needed.

How to Publish Your Novel As an Ebook - An Author's Guide

When I published my first ebook at the start of this year I knew enough about writing but didn't know quite where to start the transformation from Word manuscript to finished ebook. The final presentation had to be 100% professional but I didn't want to spend money on additional software. I made many mistakes and wasted a lot of time but eventually succeeded in self-publishing an ebook - now selling on Amazon Digital, Apple iBooks, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords and more plus a cheap website I set up for less than including domain name for a year. The site has an instant, downloadable shop and you can set the whole thing up with a couple of clicks (check out MR SITE, which sells in both UK and USA). It was a steep learning curve.

barnes and noble book

These were some of my main questions and how I got round them:

BARNES AND NOBLE

Q: WHAT SOFTWARE DO YOU NEED TO MAKE THE ACTUAL BOOK?

A: Professional designers use Adobe InDesign which retails at around 00. You don't need that. You don't need Adobe Pro either. All you need is the free version of Adobe PDF. If you're publishing straight to the ebookstores like Amazon Digital, Barnes & Noble, Apple iBooks etc you don't need a PDF, after formatting to their guidelines you just transfer Word or HTML straight through. Lulu takes PDF.

Q: HOW DO YOU MAKE AN EBOOK COVER?

A: One of the most taxing problems I had. I didn't want one of those 3D things, all I wanted was a flat image with big writing on the top, like the book covers you see on Amazon and all the booksellers' sites. After Googling and downloading lots of useless free software (nothing more than 3D boxes most of them) I found the best way was to make a cover image on Word (I used one of my photographs) and use Word Art graphics to make the titles. It took a while to work out how to get the letters over the picture:

Once you've clicked Word Art and got the box up on your screen, click the 2nd window in on the 'Edit' box (Format Word Art). The window looks like a rectangle with 3 colours next to a square.

Then a new box will appear.

Click Layout and a series of window images will appear with a dog image and lines.

Select 'Wrapping Style, In front of Text', the dog on the far right.

Remember what you have is a 'document' not a 'picture'. To turn it into an image that is recognised as an image which can be downloaded onto websites, Amazon Digital etc, take a screenshot:

Press COMMAND + SHIFT + 4 all at the same time. Your cursor turns into a cross. Place that at top left corner of your image and drag it to bottom right. Release the buttons. You'll now find an image file on your desktop. Before you can upload it anywhere it needs to be labelled with a dot and the letters.jpg like that. To relabel click on the description box until it goes blank & type in a title eg budgie.jpg.)

Q: HOW DO YOU INSERT PHOTOS?

Click Insert > Picture > From File

make sure it's labelled with a.jpg.

Use only LOW QUALITY photos. When transferring your document to PDF make sure you check the 72DPI box or your ebook will take a long time to download and clog up people's IN boxes.

Q: MY OLD VERSION OF WORD DOESN'T HAVE A FACILITY TO TURN MY TEXT INTO ADOBE PDF?

Download Open Office (free). Making covers on Open Office is a little trickier as it's more advanced technically than Word. I found it easier to make my covers on Word and transfer them to Open Office.

Q: WHAT ABOUT ISBNS? YOU HAVE TO BUY IN BULK, THAT'S EXPENSIVE!

Every print book that's sold in a shop and/or stored in a public library has to have an ISBN number and bar code. ISBN stands for the International Standard Book Number. The ISBN registration agency run by Nielsen reaches out to over 100 countries around the world. You can purchase your own ISBN if you want to give your book an identity but you have to buy them in batches of 10 which costs £111.86/3.00. The good news is ebooks don't need them. There are advantages, but you don't have to have one.

Q: HOW DO I BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND ALL THE DIFFERENT FORMATS - EPUB ETC?.

You don't need to. Upload your work to Mark Coker's excellent Smashwords and, as long as you've followed all the layout guidelines in the (free) Smashwords Style Guide your ebook will gain Premium Status. They'll then ship it (free) to many different outlets including Barnes & Noble, US iBooks, Kindle etc.

Q: I'M A UK AUTHOR BUT ALL THESE SITES ARE AMERICAN

UK authors can sell on the sites mentioned above. Worth doing as ebooks haven't taken off in the UK yet. The new Amazon Kindle 70% royalty however is only for US authors, authors outside the USA are still on 35%. Smashwords pays you via PayPal, Amazon sends cheques in the post. At Smashwords there are tax issues for non-US sellers which can be avoided, all is explained on the Smashwords website. Conversely, Lulu is UK based but takes authors from everywhere.

A Comprehensive Guide to the Barnes & Noble E-book Reader Nook

Amazon Kindle is one of the dominating products in e-book readers' market. But with the launch of Barnes & Noble e-book reader Nook one this is sure that Amazon Kindle is going to get a tough competition. These two and other e-book readers available on the market provide more or less the same features to the users. Some of the features which a user normally looks for before buying an e-book reader are - wireless connectivity, internal storage, Internet access etc. all these features are available in Barnes & Noble Nook, but there are some additional ones available too. These additional features provided by Barnes & Noble Nook are the main reasons to make it a huge success in a short duration of time. Here we will talk about some of those additional features.

barnes and noble nook color

The best feature offered by Barnes & Noble Nook is its touch sensitive color display. Like Amazon Kindle Nook also uses e-link display technology to give its readers a real time experience. But the input method available in Nook is a touch screen. You can type your bookmarks using this on screen keyboard and being a gadget freak like me you are definitely going to enjoy this feature. Another feature which Nook offers is its WiFi receiver. This feature certainly fills in the gaps in the service provided by the AT&T. To use this WiFi facility all you need to do is to type in your network provider's name and the encryption method used. All these information can be typed in using the on screen keyboard only.

BARNES AND NOBLE

As already said Barnes & Noble Nook also offers the features available in most of the e-book readers. But being priced at 9 and having some more advanced features made it a huge success in the market. During the first month of launch, Barnes & Noble Nook went out of stock in many stores just like Amazon Kindle did. This clearly explains how users are taking this e-book reader in to account. Whatever new features Barnes & Noble releases in future, Nook is going to stay in the market for a while.

Online Bookstores Add Convenience

For the avid reader, online bookstores are a dream come true. Readers can compare prices, locate hard to find titles, easily view a list of titles by the same author and even make a purchase without ever leaving their home. As online bookstores are increasing in popularity, some smaller brick and mortar bookstores may be feeling the pinch. For many consumers, cruising the internet is much more appealing than cruising the roads, going from store to store looking for that one particular title. The internet has brought a level of ease to the purchase of books and book lovers everywhere are rejoicing.

barnes and noble locations

Stores such as Amazon.com allow readers to not only read about the books, but also to read reviews by people who have read the book. Reader reviews can give a unique insight that editor's comments can not. There are other review sites, such as epinions.com, that reviews many things, including books. These types of sites allow readers to make informed, educated selections in their reading material.

BARNES AND NOBLE

The mega bookseller, Barnes &; Noble, have enjoyed much online success. Their online bookstore is thriving thousands of customers access their site each day. They have streamlined search functions allowing customers to research their desired books by title, author or even keyword. Additionally, in a stroke of genius, Barnes & Noble has capitalized on the use of the coupon as a great incentive. By situating many of their coupons so that they may be used in the store or online, they have broadened their opportunities to make sales.

Other online book sellers have also discovered the use of the coupon. Several coupon sites, such as momsview.com, mybargainbuddy.com, allonlinecoupons.com and dealcatcher.com offer coupon codes for numerous online retailers, including many of the online bookstores. There are codes for free shipping, discounts and other great deals. Shoppers can also learn about online bookstores that they have not yet checked out so these sites also act as introductory agents as well.

Some online bookstores are not one book seller, but many. Abebooks.com is one such site. Shoppers with Abebooks can enjoy great ease in shopping with a very detailed search engine as well as ease in payment. Shoppers can review many books from many sellers through Abebooks' website. They may select books from as many different sellers as they wish, but they only make one payment through Abebooks' check out. This unique feature allows shoppers to compare prices of various titles and find the best deal on title price as well as shipping price.

Online bookstores make it easier and more convenient for booklovers to shop for and purchase books. They can shop for titles by their favorite author, favorite genre or find out of print or rare books. They can read reviews and see how other readers enjoyed certain books. They can compare prices and find great deals on books that may not be in stock at their local bookstore. The internet is making it easier and faster for readers to make connections with the books that they love.

Nook Review

One of the best products I bought this year was the Nook from Barnes and Noble. The Nook is an e-reader that is sleek, light-weight, and has a lot of great features.

barnes and noble nook ereader

Probably the best feature that I like is the free 3G connectivity to the online B&N bookstore. I've never had any connection problems and an entire bookstore of e-books is available at my fingertips. This has been one of my favorite features because as soon as I finish reading one book I'm disappointed if I don't have another one lined up ready to go. Not a problem for me now.

BARNES AND NOBLE

With a touch screen menu you can go to your library which holds all of your e-books, check your favorite daily blogs, shop for more books, play games, connect to the internet and more.

When I pitched the idea to my wife it was an easy sell. I have so many books taking up shelf space (and floor space in some rooms) in my house she was excited at the prospect of shoring up some space on the walls.

But what if I just want to borrow a book from somebody? If anybody else has a Nook and recommends a book to me, they can lend it to me and vice versa. So the e-book would go from their Nook to mine.

The craziness doesn't stop there. Go into any Barnes and Noble and through the free Wi-Fi feature you can read any book that Barnes and Noble offers as though you're reading a book right off the shelf.

I researched both the Kindle and the Nook before I made the decision for the Nook. Honestly, they're not that far apart in features. The main ones that separated the Nook in my mind were the touch screen menu and the ability to borrow/lend e-books to others. I think both are great products though.

Typical e-books run anywhere from the low price of free, to as high as .99 for new releases still in hardback. Most books are .99.

The Nook with 3G and Wi-Fi currently runs about 9. The Nook without 3G but has Wi-Fi runs about 9.

Social Savvy Means Time Management

How can you budget for social media time? People keep asking me how they can add it to their already packed daily schedule. They fear that employees will be using their work time to Tweet about personal things or to talk to their friends on Facebook. One of the biggest complaints I hear from salespeople as well as CEO's relates to time.

Mike Damphousse with Green Leads, a small business with 30 employees designed to help sales generate leads, said, "If we're not careful, this place could come to a grinding halt." He went on to explain that he wants people to use the social media but at their own pace. Employees are encouraged to spend time on it while they are still held accountable for meeting their sales goals. Damphousse hired a junior marketing person on staff who dedicates a third of her time to coordinate the social media activity. She reads 75 to 100 RSS feeds and when she finds something of interest to someone's online persona, she forwards it to them to Tweet. "She spends a few hours a day doing this to make it easier for everyone else," he said. With this strategy, Damphousse is able to get involved with the social media without risking too much time away from 'selling.'

Recently, Dave Evans wrote a piece titled, "Social Media Is Not Free: Here's Why." In that article he discusses the importance of using time wisely. He wrote, "What are the real costs of social media? Start with the opportunity cost to the business as a result of employees listening, analyzing, participating, collaborating and in general doing exactly what they should be doing to ensure a successful social media implementation."

Everything you read now will talk about advances made in sales by using social media. You'll read how Starbucks brought 1 million customers into their stores in one day with a Twitter campaign. You'll read how a small hotel (Roger Smith Hotel) in New York City searched for people on Twitter asking about tourism in New York and increased its sales by ,000. You'll read how Domino's Pizza increased their volume with a Foursquare application. All this suggests that you'd better get busy on the social media.

What you must do, however, is be social savvy. By that we mean, don't just jump in the fray. Figure out what you want to do (that's your goal, by the way) and then decide which tool will best accomplish that goal. Once you've done that, jump in. Then do as Dave Evans suggests, "Plan for-and by so doing, account for-the time required to listen, post, respond and manage a social media sales strategy."

Here are some time-saving tips:

• Set clear time goals. Many people read blogs in the morning when they would normally read the newspaper. Give yourself a certain length of time daily to read and respond to blogs (30 minutes).

• Back up your Tweets. Use Hootsuite or TweetLater to write several Tweets and time their publication throughout the day.

• Use Google Alerts to find posts of interest throughout the web. I set up Google Alerts for Social Media and ROI. I get a digest daily. I scan those articles, Tweet some, comment on some and use others in my own blog posts. I spend no more than an hour a day doing that.

• Work each social media site at a given time and a given day throughout the week. I work LinkedIn twice a week. I go to Facebook daily for 15 minutes.

• Use a company like Hubspot to identify Tweets, blog posts and other web-related content that are relevant to your keywords. Spend about 30 minutes daily scanning those items and joining the conversation.

• Write blog posts at a given time weekly and spread out their scheduled publication. Blog no less than twice weekly.

• If you get too absorbed in the social media, once you set a time limit, set your timer. Stop when that timer sounds.

It's not all fun. It's work and then it's fun.

Textbook Book Review - An Introduction to Business

Are you considering a career in business? Perhaps now is the time to get yourself ready, as the economy starts to recover and jobs start to come back to America. Are you considering getting an MBA, or a degree in business? Do you see yourself in the future as being a business manager of a business unit, or retail store? If so, perhaps you should learn more about how businesses operate, make their money, and manage their employees.

Of course it's not all that simple, s there is a lot more to it than that. Nevertheless, it makes sense to get an early start, and perhaps consider some business courses as well. If you don't have time to go to school right now there's a very good book that I would like to recommend to you. It is a textbook, and it is available online. It is a book that I do own in my personal library for reference, even though I am a retired franchisor, and perhaps I could've written the book myself.

BARNES AND NOBLE TEXTBOOK STORE NYC

The reason I keep this book is because I believe it's interesting to get the academic perspective on the topic, and to learn what our business schools, and community colleges are teaching future students who will attain business degrees, and then move into the workforce. The name of the book is;

"Intro to Business" Fourth Edition) by Steven A. Eggland, Les R. Dlabay, James L. Burrow, Robert A. Ristau, South Western Educational Textbook Publishers, Cincinnati, OH, (2000), 677 pages, ISBN: 0538-69146-8.

This book is broken into chapters or sections, which are referred to as units. Each unit and subsequent chapters goes into a different aspect of business, things that you need to know. For instance unit one talks about the economic environment, which is extremely important right now, as we exit the downturn in the business cycle to an inflationary period. Learn about business cycles, creating statistical modeling, and making proper economic decisions. Then there is a section or unit on business operations, and one on business and government regulations.

There are also units on international business, as well as small business management. Also you can learn about business credit and financing, as well as strategic investment strategies and risk management and return on investment. This is a very well-rounded book, easy-to-read, nicely formatted, and pre-highlighted to make your learning much easier. If you are looking for a starter book on the introduction to business - this is definitely a book that I would like to recommend to you, and like I said you can find it online.

The Television campaign is entitled "My Story" which portrays a literature loving female customer from childhood to adulthood and the seminal stories that fostered her love of books from tangible form to now digital format. The closing images reinforce the ability to "take your story wherever you want it to go" as the woman in the spot sits on the beach reading on NOOK's crisp and clear E Ink screen after using the device's fast, wireless access to find her next great read from more than a million digital titles.

BARNES AND NOBLE

Sony Reader Review

The Sony Reader has more editions than any other ebook reader. There is the Touch Edition, the Daily Edition, and the Pocket Edition. Read the reviews below and discover the best one for you.

barnes and noble nook ereader

Sony's biggest competitors are the Amazon Kindle and the Barnes and Noble Nook. Take a look at their different editions.

BARNES AND NOBLE

Touch Edition
The Touch Edition lets you access up to 350 books. And the best feature is the touch screen. It's so easy to navigate.

Daily Edition
The Daily Edition lets you access your books and periodicals wirelessly. But it's the most expensive of the Sony Readers

Pocket Edition
The Pocket Edition has a small 5 inch display which makes it easy to take with you.

The Results
The Sony Reader has 2 major challenges.

You have to connect to a computer to download your books (except for the wireless version) And they support limited file formats so the book you really want to read may not be available

My Choice My choice for an ereader is still the Kindle. And here is why:

Amazon is by far the largest company of all the ebook reader companies They have been pursuing this technology the longest They have the largest number of books You'll be able to buy them in Target

So if you are still on the fence about which one to choose, head over to Amazon and check out the reviews of the Kindle. You won't be disappointed. Or check out my blog at Ebook Reader Reviews Blog.com.

Digital Book Readers File Formats Information You Won't Find in eBook Reader Reviews

I was recently writing an article about the new Nook and Sony Daily digital book readers ability to handle the ePub standard, a file format that is fast becoming the preferred file format of the eBook publishers. It struck me that it may be helpful if I explained the differences between proprietary formats and the ePub standard, something you will not find in eBook reader reviews, but something you should remember when researching the many digital book readers on the market, prior to your final purchase decision.

barnes and noble book store

It was, in the early days of digital book readers, somewhat accepted by the buying public that both Sony and Amazon released their content coded in their own file format. What this effectively did was tied the eBook to one device, but it did not take long before customers caught on, something that hit the likes of Sony hard.

BARNES AND NOBLE

But fast forward to today, the industry had been looking for a standard file format, firstly to remove uncertainty in the customers mind and secondly to do as the title suggests, standardize e-publishing.

It does look more and more like they have settled on the emerging Epub format. Why, you may ask, with so many other options about, have some of the biggest names in the industry thrown their weight behind this new format when there was, some would point out, a perfectly good one in the form of Mobipockets universally available file format. That's really a question only the likes of Google, Sony and now Barnes and Noble can answer.

Looking on from the sidelines, it seems like the three of them have ganged up to deliver a good slapping for Amazon, as their latest offerings - the Kindle US and Kindle International digital book readers - don't have natural support for the ePub standard.

On the other hand the latest Sony Edition Range of digital book readers, which incidentally are receiving some rave eBook reader reviews, and the brand new Barnes and Noble Nook reading device all support the ePub format. Titles at both the Sony-Store and the Barnes and Noble online bookstore will publish in this format, something that both companies are happy to sing the praises of.

Now, throw into the mix the quite considerable influence Google have on everything online and look at their recent backing of the ePub format. They intend to publish the whole of their massive library of over one million books in the ePub format, many of these titles are free to down load.

These developments have opened up the market totally. No longer do users of digital book readers have to purchase content from one source, this move can only lead to greater competition and ultimately lower eBook prices. And the encouraging thing is three massive companies have totally embraced, even instigated, it.

This leaves the Kindle digital book readers in a very difficult position, news travels at the same speed as prices change in this industry. Customers of the Kindle will feel short changed when this news hits the eBook reader review sites, and they every right they have to feel that way too don't you think.
